The Commission services have produced a preliminary draft proposal for a Regulation on hydrogen powered motor vehicles. The objective of the draft is to lay down harmonised testing requirements for the type-approval of hydrogen powered vehicles. A consultation has been opened today in order to gather the views of stakeholders and general public on planned new rules and to ensure the safe operation of hydrogen powered vehicles.
The proposed Regulation aims to ensure the safe operation of hydrogen powered vehicles by incorporating them in the European vehicle type-approval framework through establishing safety requirements for the hydrogen storage system of these vehicles. The proposal will permit the approval and placing on the market of vehicles using hydrogen and will contribute to the confidence in the new technology for potential users and the public at large.
Stakeholders are invited to provide comments on the issues covered by the proposal. In particular, they should comment on whether the preliminary draft proposal would impose any undue burden on manufacturers or suppliers compared to the benefits in terms of safe operation of the vehicle.
The deadline for participation is the 15th September 2006. Contributions should be sent to the following mail box: entr-hydrogen@ec.europa.eu
