The European Commission adopted eight Regional Programmes that frame actions under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Cohesion Fund in Sweden for the next seven years, which will lead to a total European cohesion policy investment of €1.89 billion or 17.4 billion SEK, up to 2013.
These programmes are tailor-made to suit conditions in each of these regions. At the same time, they all put a strong emphasis on innovation, research and development as well as support for entrepreneurship, which is very much in line with the Lisbon agenda defined at the European level to stimulate growth and jobs.
The so called earmarking of funds in the Swedish programmes to support the Lisbon agenda of growth and jobs is very high at 86%. In addition, a preliminary assessment from the authorities indicates that there will be the creation of at least 33.800 new jobs and 12.800 new enterprises in Sweden.
Moreover, for the first time, the EU cohesion policy programs cover the whole territory of Sweden i.e. the regions of Västsverige, Skåne-Blekinge, Östra Mellansverige, Stockholm, Övre Norrland, Norra Mellansverige, Småland och Öarna and Mellersta Norrland.
